Chanca Piedra is a remarkable herb traditionally used to treat kidney stones, gallstones, liver issues and to purge harmful substances. It is a common tropical plant that is widespread in the Amazon rainforest and other tropical areas of the world. Chanca Piedra has been used medicinally by the indigenous people for generations. It grows abundantly like a "weed" and for good reason. I've noticed all the herbs that grow this way, that many people view as annoying or an eye-sore, are actually powerful healing herbs. No wonder Mother Nature was so generous with these herbs! 🌿
Chanca Piedra and it's Benefits for the Liver
Chanca Piedra has strong antioxidant properties and studies have shown that it contains a protein that protects liver cells from oxidative stress.
With stone breaking, anti-parasitic, and anti-fungal properties, it can help expel parasites, liver flukes, yeast overgrowth, etc from the liver. Chanca Piedra enchances the natural detoxification process of the liver. It is a valuable component to add to a multiple herb, liver-protection blend.
Chanca Piedra and it's Benefits for the Kidneys
Calcium oxalate is the main component of kidney stones. Chanca piedra has been found to lessen the amount of this substance as well as prevent it from binding together. Meaning, it inhibits the formation of kidney stones and breaks up stones that have already formed!😃
Chanca piedra's diuretic properties relax the tube that pushes your urine from the kidneys to the bladder. This helps to consistently eliminate any harmful substances that can form stones. It also contains organic compounds that reduce the spasm activity of the muscles in the kidneys, bladder, and ureter so that kidney stones can pass more smoothly out of the body.
Chanca Piedra and Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, this herb is known as Bhumi Amla or Bhumyamalaki. Ayurvedic practitioners have been using this herb to treat fatty liver, liver cirrhosis, inflammation of the spleen, jaundice and skin diseases for many years!
The leaves can be made into a paste and applied to infected skin to treat it
The fresh juice of the leaf can be taken on an empty stomach to treat indigestion
Decoction of the whole plant is given as a blood purifier
Chanca Piedra, Candida, Parasites and Other Harmful Organisms
Chanca piedra is also known for its traditional use against parasites, bacterial, viral and fungal infection. This chanca piedra use was also supported by a few medical publications. One study found chanca piedra beneficial in treating chickenpox (varicella), vaginal yeast infections (vaginal candidiasis) and pulmonary tuberculosis (8). Another study that tested chanca piedra antibacterial activity, found it to be effective against H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori) bacteria, without affecting beneficial lactic acid bacteria. The significance of this finding is that unlike antibiotics that kill both good and bad bacteria, chanca piedra was able to selectively fight H. pylori without killing the good bacteria (9).
Chanca piedra also showed significant antibacterial activity against the pathogenic bacteria Bacillus pumilus, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Micrococcus luteus, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia as well as antifungal activity against candida albicans (10).
